Bretby Art Pottery

A Collectors Guide
By
Michael David Ash

Bretby Art Pottery (H.Tooth & Co. Ltd) was famous throughout the world.
It began production in 1883 at Church Gresley, Derbyshire but within 12 months had moved to the site in Woodville, Derbyshire that it was to occupy for well over 100 years.
The pottery was started by Henry Tooth the artist and William Ault the business man and had much early success.
In 1887, however, William Ault left to start his own pottery company in nearby Swadlincote leaving Henry Tooth
to carry on alone.
Bretby wares are numerous and varied and many cleverly mimic wood, metal etc. Some pieces display lifelike sweets or biscuits on green leaf dishes whilst other pieces have bronzed or copper finishes. The Bretby trademark of the Sun rising over the word Bretby became known across the world.
The pottery finally closed its doors in September 1996.
