1989 - 90

The first thing to mention about this season was the terrible colour of the handbook. A sort of lime green, reminiscent of mushy peas from the cheapest fish and chip shop in the worst part of town. But chairman Maurice's message of enthusiasm must have hit home as successful socialite Ken Denton put on a race evening at Grattan Sports and Social club. The night was a hugely glittering occasion with all the celebrities and superstars of the Bradford league in attendance.

But without question the most significant event to feature in this season's handbook was the report and picture of David Hope wearing his gold medal for table tennis at the Seoul Paralympics. A member of the Hermits Club at the time David was resplendent in his GB tracksuit brandishing his medal and a bouquet of flowers. Best of all he beat a Frenchman in the final! David was subjected to the usual attention on his return, including meeting Princess Diana and Frank Bruno (although not together). He also received a civic reception in his honour.
