Pairs (Class A Shield and Cariad Cup)

The Interdepartmental Offshore Regatta

The IDOR has been held every year since the late 1960’s, starting as a race to Cherbourg in members' own boats. Over the years it has evolved into a mixture of inshore and offshore races held over five days, mainly in the Solent but including a race round the Isle of Wight, in a chartered matched fleet.

Who can enter?

Entry is open to Civil Service and affiliated departments, and in recent years this has been extended to include CSSA clubs, such as Fishers Green, Littleton andCSORC.

Where is it held?

This year the regatta is again hosted by the Island Sailing Club, Cowes, and the boats are from Sunsail’s fleet of Sunsail F40s.

2012 Programme

11th - 15th June 2012

Sunday

17:00 There will be an introductory safety briefing and boat draw in the bar of the PHYC (Sunsail building) at Port Solent. Crews can then move to the boats when they are ready, where a Sunsail representative will conduct a handover with the skipper, including a safety briefing and inventory check.

Location of Port Solent here.

Monday

Morning: practice.

15:30 There will be a short offshore passage race hosted by Sea View Yacht Club starting off the club start line at Sea View (near Ryde), and finishing at the Island Sailing Club start line at Cowes. This will count towards the offshore trophies, but will only count single points (rather than double).

20:00 Skippers' and Navigators' Briefing at ISC. The ISC will be offering a buffet dinner at 18:30.

Tuesday

Offshore race west, possibly followed by a short race after the finish of the offshore race.

Wednesday

Round the Island race.

20:00 - Regatta dinner and prizegiving at the Royal Corinthian YC. This year all the prizes except the Eric Seal Trophy for overall winner will be presented at the dinner. The Eric Seal Trophy will be presented at the CSSA AGM.

Thursday

Four short inshore races from committee boat starts. Wednesday's programme might be swapped with Thursday's if the conditions favour it.

Evening: regatta prizegiving and dinner at the Royal Corinthian Yacht Club Cowes.

Friday

10:00 Passage race back to Portsmouth followed by a prizegiving for the final race.

Entry Fees

Most of the entry fee will be covered by a grant from CSSC but some expenses have increased and the use of a committee boat will add to the costs. Hence there will be a charge of £280 per boat to include 8 regatta meal tickets (@ £27.50 a head) and £60 to cover these extra expenses.

Booking arrangements

25 matched boats have been reserved with Sunsail from 19:00 on Sunday 10 June 2012 to 17:00 on Friday 15 June 2012. Boats should be booked directly with Sunsail.
Charters cost £1710.50 inc VAT, plus an insurance deposit of £3000. Boats can be reserved for a deposit of 25% of the charter fee. The contact is Grant James (0)23 92 222221, grant.james@sunsail.com,

Berthing

As usual, places have been reserved with Cowes Yacht Haven (01983 299975). They have yet to set the prices for next year but as a rough guide the 2011 fee was around £130 for 4 nights. Please pay CYH direct, preferably on the Monday.

The Regatta Dinner

The dinner has again been booked with the Royal Corinthian YC for Thursday 14 June. It will be a set meal and included in the entry fee. A vegetarian option will be available if booked directly with RCYC (01983 293581). www.rcyc.co.uk. RCYC temporary membership has been paid by the CSSC.

Pairs Competition for the Class A Shield and Cariad Cup

Awarded to the team with the lowest combined points in racing up to Thursday evening. Offshore races count as two place points – no discards.

For those new to the regatta, the pairs competition is a way to encourage the exchange of knowledge and ideas as well as to encourage social mixing between crews, and of course to add another element to the competitive side of the regatta. We suggest you take some time out during the week to invite your buddy boat round for a drink.
