PENHURST

A small hamlet standing amidst farm lands and woodland, between the Deer Park of Ashburnham on the south and low hills to the north.

The Church dates from about 1340 to 1500. It has a small 17th Century Chapel, now used as a vestry, built as a private pew for William RELF, who also built the present Manor House and may well have presented the silver chalice (dated 1610) which is used at Communion Services to this day.

Much of the history of this area is closely linked to the history of the extinct Sussex Iron Industry and Ashburnham and Penhurst are no exceptions, with the last furnace being extinguished in 1813, after the casting of three fire backs still in use at the Manor House.

Today there stands a sandstone church with a private burial ground and a small Manor House of the period of Elizabeth I, with a cluster of farm dwellings around.

Well worth a visit if you can make it!
