Northern Rail's livery includes a space on the bodyside for promotional vinyls. The first application of vinyls was to 150145 in July 2005, promoting the Buxton Festival.
The following class 156s units have now received promotional liveries:
156.469 - Sheffield - Leeds Fast Service (since removed) | |

• The Northern Rail franchise started in December 2004, together with the launch of a new Sheffield - Leeds fast service. To celebrate the 1st anniversary Northern applied special branding to Heaton based 156469, with images of Sheffield and Leeds on either side of the carriages. [news story] 156469 is seen at Middlesbrough on 17.Dec.2005, on a Darlington - Saltburn service. |
The reliveried train was launched by representatives of West Yorkshire PTE and South Yorkshire PTE on Monday December 12, 2005 working the 09:16 Leeds to Sheffield service, and the 10:51 return.
The vinyls also included the 'Yorkshire - Alive with Opportunity!' logo of Yorkshire Forward, a body which also funded the launch of the service.
Six class 158 units had bodyside vinyls with similar images applied during 2007.
156469 Lost its picture livery when it was repainted into the standard Northern Rail livery in April 2008.

156.461 - Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway | |

Northern Rail's 156461 has had vinyls promoting the Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway added to its Northern livery. The unit is seen here at Bolton on 28 August 2006. It was given a launch ceremony at Ravenglass station on Wednesday 16th August whilst working the 10:06 Preston - Carlisle service. (Photos) This is the second 156 to promote the R&ER line; 156420 carries the name La'al Ratty. |
The vinyl includes the words 'Steam to the Hills on the Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway www.ravenglass-railway.co.uk ' in dark blue lettering, plus the R&ER's logo. (R&ER link)

156.484 - The Settle - Carlisle Railway | |

Northern Rail's 156484 has vinyls promoting the Settle and Carlisle Railway. The unit is seen here at Huddersfield on 12 May 2007. First day out in the new livery was on Wednesday 2nd May, working the 10:49 Leeds to Carlisle service. The new look train was developed in partnership by Northern Rail, the Friends of the Settle-Carlisle Line and the Settle-Carlisle Railway Development Company. [News Story]. |

Northern Rail's 156490 has vinyls promoting the National Railway Museum. The unit is seen here at Liverpool Lime Street on 3rd May 2008. First day out in the new livery was on Saturday 29th March. |
The Image features the Class 373 'Eurostar' cab, LNER 4468 'Mallard', and the replica of Stephenson's 'Rocket'.

There were separate vinyls toward the inner ends of each vehicle promoting the NRM's "1968 and all that" event. |

These were replaced in June 2008 with vinyls advertising the "Yorkshire Wheel", but later removed in November 2008. |

156.448 - Hadrian's Wall Country | |

Northern Rail's 156448 has vinyls promoting Hadrian's Wall Country. The unit is seen here departing Manchester Oxford Road on 31 May 2008. Northern Rail teamed up with Hadrian’s Wall Heritage Ltd to promote the World Heritage Site and its surrounding landscape with the special livery. The Wall was built in AD122 by the Roman army on the orders of the emperor Hadrian, and stretches from South Tyneside to the Cumbrian coast. The unit had appeared with the vinyls on 2nd May 2008, but the 'media launch' was not until 6th of June at Newcastle Central Station. [Press Release] |

156.469 - Bishop Auckland | |
|
156469 now has vinyls promoting Bishop Auckland (previously was Sheffield - Leeds). The unit is seen at Carlisle on 31 May 2008. 156469 appeared with the vinyls on Saturday 17th May and it operated on the Bishop Auckland - Middlesbrough route that weekend. [Press release].
