Strathclyde Passenger Transport

156 home page

Until November 2005, local services in the west of Scotland were operated by ScotRail on behalf of Strathclyde Passenger Transport Executive, and the PTE sponsored 28 class 156 units to work its supported services on non-electrified lines.

The specification and funding of all ScotRail and SPT rail services is now set by Transport Scotland, and from April 2006 SPT has become 'Strathclyde Partnership for Transport'.

Three SPT liveried 156s at Glasgow Central on July 31, 2004.

156506, nearest, has the latest 'SPT rail' branding.

SPT's Carmine and Cream livery first appeared in 1996 and all 28 units had been reliveried by 2000.

Interior improvements to the fleet have been carried out incrementally over the last few years, and a number of units had been repainted before any interior refurbishment was done.

This started in autumn 1999, and involved renewing seat cushions, and replacing carpets and seat covers with a new green design. Earlier repaints returned to Springburn Works to have this work done.

SPT funded further interior enhancements, and this work was done by Hunslet-Barclay, Kilmarnock from May to December 2001.

The units received a full interior repaint, new fabric on the side walls, and transparent overhead luggage racks. The table tops were given a pale blue wood stain pattern finnish.

A separate programme has seen cycle racks fitted to those units that did not already have them.

Additional work took place during the autumn of 2002 when new pale blue plastic seat backs were fitted at Corkerhill depot.

The latest enhancements to the SPT funded units are diffused lighting and an electronic Passenger Information System (P.I.S.).

These have been fitted to units since Spring 2004 as they pass through Springburn for C6 overhauls, although some of the earlier examples will need to return for the lighting 'gondolas'.

Scrolling LED P.I.S. displays are fitted at either end of the passenger saloons, and the destination blind above the drivers window is also replaced with an electronic display.
