Stunningly well-written long one-shot which follows Severus's feelings about Lily and about his own life from age seven until death (although the idea that Severus drifted away from Lily, rather than vice versa, doesn't realy fit what we see in canon).

WIP which is canon-compatible up to just before the end of DH. Remus Lupin survived. Hermione was spirited away from the battlefield by an unknown captor, and magically brainwashed into believing that Voldemort won and that her captor is hiding her and keeping her safe in return for very grim sexual favours. When Harry finally locates her, thirteen years later, he starts on a trail which may lead to the rescue of a fellow prisoner who has suffered even worse, or may lead to a wrongful accusation against him.

The Apprentice and the Necromancer (formerly Probation) by JunoMagic
Long EWE multi-part story with slight Garth Nix crossover, which is canon up until Snape is bitten by Nagini. Hermione manages to save his life, ending up poisoned herself in the process. While Snape is still unconscious he is tried in absentia for crimes he committed as a Death Eater, and given three years' probation, during which he must find a wife or face life in Azkaban. Later, the story morphs into a mystery thriller, as Severus and Hermione investigate a magical threat to the survival of reality itself, with ramifications leading beyind the Veil. Continued in The Book of the Dead.

Desperately sad but beautifully written vignette of Snape, dying, thinking about Lily and his own expectation of failure, which had held him back from properly expressing his feelings for her.

Ashes of Armageddon by Emily Waters
An extremely grim but very well-written EWE WIP (though a bit Britpicky). Harry never met with Dumbledore's spirit at the astral King's Cross, so he never got confirmation Snape was telling the truth. Five years after the war, an increasingly dark Harry, now Minister for Magic, has convinced himself Snape was lying. He forces the convalescent ex-spy to become his bonded slave so he can make him suffer for all the crimes he imagines him to have committed, but the nice Harry and the inner sadist are in constant struggle. Although there are some very cruel scenes this is not as nasty as "Harry punishes Snape" stories usually are, since Snape knows from the first that he has allies in Hermione and Ron, who want both to protect Snape and to work out what is wrong with Harry before he metamorphoses into the next Dark Lord, and the story is ultimately hopeful. Will be slash eventually.

The Asp at Hogwarts by Inkwolf
Long complete multi--part story which follows Albus Severus Potter's first year at Hogwarts, and the mysterious quest set him by the white-skinned, black-haired ghost whose name he does not think to ask. Like JKR (but unlike most fan-writers) the author has the gift of writing believably about teenagers whilst still making them interesting to adults, and the Original Characters are some of the liveliest and most interesting in fan-fiction.

EWE WIP. Snape has survived, but all the survivors are emotionally damaged. Snape is probably the most nearly-functional and he has ended up in a strange ménage à trois with Hermione and Ron, trying to hold the others together as Harry and Ron waver in and out of addiction and mental breakdown. EWE multi-part story. Snape survives, but a corrupt Ministry refuses to acknowledge his innocence and he is condemned to Azkaban for ten miserable years, and then released only to be sold as a slave. Purchased by Arthur, he works with the remnant of the Order to uncover a dark scheme to crush dissent by controlling the minds of the British wizarding population. I was in two minds whether to include this because the character development and writing-style are only so-so: there is, for example, almost no consideration of the psychological effects Snape's suffering would have had on him. But the plot is complex, fast-paced and exciting and it managed to hold my attention.

A touching medical and psychological drama, although IMO the last chapter suffers from having been squashed into the shape of a challenge-story about sensuality which clashes wildly with the rest of it. EWE and slightly AU in that Remus also survived. Four-part, complete.

Harry tries to bring Snape back to life but it all goes horribly wrong, leaving Snape with a restless unsatisfying half-life to which there can be only one end. Depressing, but highly original and well-written.
