Harry Potter fanfic links (most of them involving Snape!):
Poetry
The great majority of fannish poetry is just... abysmal. Much of it is almost indescribably bad. Yet I learned when I was first interested in Star Trek and Blake's Seven fandom, twenty-odd years ago, that if you plough through the dross there are a fair number of decent pieces out there, which have something interesting to say and say it competently - and there are a precious few which are of the highest professional standard, and could stand alongside any poem ever written and not look shabby. So I've done the ploughing for you, and turned up lots of decent hard-wearing flints and a few nuggets of real gold.
This is not, btw, an exhaustive list of all the "real" Potter-verse on fanfiction.net. At time of writing this I am still working my way through them, and in any case there have been some poems which were perfectly proficient, "proper" poems but which I decided against because I didn't find them very interesting; while at the same time I have include some pieces which are technically a bit ropey but which I thought were interesting and original. Poems which I consider to be of exceptionally high standard, such that even someone who wasn't a Potter fan might want to read them just for their quality, are marked with a star -
See also A Note to Aspiring Poets on the FanFiction Follies page, for some advice on things to bear in mind when writing poetry.

The names of the two poems are sirius in azkaban and the moon godess to remus lupin, which should be fairly self-explanatory....

by
Professor Cassandra
A slightly demented Potterverse version of The 12 Days of Christmas, with humorous asides.
addict
by
WildeOne
This is (bizarrely in my opinion) supposed to be about a slash relationship between Hermione and Pansy, but it could be anyone thinking about a female ex friend or lover they are trying to get over. Tiny, elegant almost-haiku.

As Winter Falls on Hogwarts
by
NefertariHime
A series of vignettes of different characters, seen as the snow begins to fall. The author has attempted a complex rhythmic structure which sometimes goes hopelessly haywire, but where it works it works well and the poem is full of beautiful images.

Atropos

A look at the workings of fate in the Harry Potter universe.
Attribute/A Tribute
by
duj
A companion-piece to the chapter What Hermione Did Next of
Borolin's (which is to say,
Dyce's and my) story
Lost and Found, based around the structure of Emily Dickinson's poem Pain (but more powerful, IMO). Snape has been retrieved after months of torture by Voldemort, and is slowly recovering, but memory still has the power to paralyse him with dread. The court referred to in the poem is his own self-judgement.

by
Eizoku
A look at the death of Sirius, and the appropriateness of his name.
Black
by
XillyriaX
Qua poetry I would say this is competentish but unexceptional - but as a look at the inner workings of Voldemort's mind I thought it was creepy enough to be worth including.

I'm at a loss how to describe this, except to say that somebody male who is about to make a sacrifice (Harry, Draco, Albus, Snape, Ron - could be lots of people) is dedicating their sacrifice to various aspects of life. Maybe. Or then again, maybe not.

Broken Hero
by
columbine-icetree
Sirius running towards his death. I wasn't sure whether to include this or not as I felt the last verse was very weak - but I decided on the whole that it was still pretty good.
A broken spirit's hope
by
Alannis
Snape thinks of himself as something broken into sharp pieces, so that anyone who wants to touch him will cut themselves. Not nearly as sloppy as the title suggests, although it is really poetic prose rather than true poetry, in that it has nice ideas elegantly expressed, but very little rhythm.
Burn Baby Burn
by
Nest Freemark
Ginny Weasley as damaged and desperate (and gay). Totally canon-shafted by the way Ginny later developed in the books, but still a good poem.
Calm Before the Storm
by
gevenni

by
Serpentina
Draco invites Ginny to look inside his heart.
Cherries
by
Rhys Quinn
Petunia and Vernon look back at their life together, and how they met. This is only borderline as poetry - it has no rhyme and little rhythm, and is more a series of poetic monologues - but it's very readable and the ideas are interesting and quite touching.

Lupin thinking about maturity and the lack of it, and why he never quite fit in with the rest of the Marauders.
Choices
by
kestinstewart
A look at the choices which led Snape into and then out of the Dark. I wasn't sure whether to include this as it is erratic in a way which suggests English might not the the writer's first language, but I decided it had enough good lines and images to be worth it.

Lily brought a warming fire into Severus's life, but when he lost her, the fire was left to burn without an object.
The Colors of My House
by
CallaHaruka
An outstandingly good poem: in the wake of Dumbledore's death, Snape contemplates the different meanings, both good and bad, of the Slytherin colours. There is a second poem on the same page, called To Compel, which is competent but IMO nothing like as strikingly good. You may find you have to go to the Occlumency site and set up an account before you can access this story.

A Creature Who Still Smells of Sea
by
rae-sim
A small, bright island is beleaguered by the sea. An old man defends the island and befriends a creature who comes from the waves, who desires the light and the land but can never be wholly free of the sea. The characters are not named but appear to be allegorical versions of Snape and Dumbledore.

DANE'S POEM
by
hrmi'nebook
This one really shouldn't be here, because it's about another story entirely (The Adoration of Jenna Fox by Mary E Pearson) and the author just listed it under Harry Potter because they couldn't find where else to put it. But it's so exceedingly good - about somebody who is, or feels themselves to be, an artificial construct (complete with translation into binary) - that I had to list it.

Date to Expire: Yesterday
by
rapunzel.in.black
Someone thinks of a lost love as a sort of disease, eating away at them. I'm not sure why it was listed under Harry Potter fics as there's no indication who the characters are, although I suppose it could be Severus thinking about Lily: but it's a very clever piece whoever it is.
De l'Un D'un autre
by
xx.just.a.contradiction.xx
Three poems, of which the first is a cool, refined and formal piece showing Andromeda Tonks contemplating the death of her sister Narcissa. The other two poems - Snape thinking about Lily, and George about Fred - are in my opinion much less successful, but the Andromeda/Narcissa one is a gem.

HOGWARTS IN OZ!
by
Elijah's Chick
What would the Harry Potter books be like if they were set in Australia? Very silly. [N.B. "Thongs" in this context are a type of sandal, elsewhere called flip-flops. ]
The Hogwarts Library
by
Ephemeral Eternity
A sequence of narrative verses in which Tom Riddle has left a note inside a Hogwarts library book, which Hermione later finds, opening a connection between them. Elegantly written, although the writer's assumption that readers will need a dictionary is annoyingly patronizing.
Hufflepuff Is The Place To Be!
by
Final Fiction X
Why Hufflepuffs are the best.
I Am
by
Draco-luver
A look at the four houses - riddled with annoying typing-errors, but well-written and very amusing.
I Am
by
Silver Sailor Ganymede
An unusual one for me to include, since it's an anti-Snape poem which portrays him as a villain, but I thought it was good enough to be worth the effort.
I am blind
by
Silbermond
Ginny mourns for Harry, slain in the war. The writer is German-speaking and the English goes a bit haywire at times, but it shows real talent nevertheless.
I Am Lord Voldemort
by
AquaRias
Tom Riddle's boast.
I Am the Other Enemy
by
Darkaus
Snape contemplating Harry. As poetry, this one barely qualifies - it's almost completely devoid of rhythm - but it has some interesting ideas and images.

I am the Very Model of a Future Evil Overlord
by
Elspeth1
Gilbert & Sullivan do Draco....
I Dream of Conquest
by
SakuraxxDrops
A look at Tom Riddle's thoughts and goals. The rhythm here is a but clunky and erratic, but despite this this poem contains some highly original and creepy imagery.

by
Lethe
Draco desires Harry from afar.

If Harry's parents had lived, there would have been things about them that made him angry, that he resented; but instead, they are just ciphers to him.
Icarus
by
Bil
A sad look at Harry's progress through life.
If God would Send His Angels

Not really a Potter-verse at all, though it was on the HP listings; just a bit of musing about the state of the world.

by
black lambs don't lie
A sad, creepy little piece - Peter Pettigrew looks at what his betrayal has done to the other Marauders.
imperfect
by
The Cynic
Tom Riddle, stripping away his inconvenient humanity.

In the House that Severus Built

Humour: Sirius Black sings a mocking song about his pureblood relatives.
It Was Me
by
New Dragon Rider
A very dark take on Remus.
Jagged Eternity
by
fractured-shadow
Accomplished, surreal and obscure. According to the summary the idea is that Harry has taken steps to prevent himself from feeling emotion, in order to prepare himself for battle - though that isn't really clear from the poem itself.
Just Kill Me Now
by
Alex the Anachronistic
A jerky, jazzy look at Snape's life - rather awkwardly-written but the repeat refrain is nice, and it ends better than the books did.

The Last Enemy That Shall Be Destroyed
(formerly A Collection of Acrostic Poems) by
Fragile-Strength (formerly midnightandemerald)
Starts off with a series of acrostics and then branches out into other formal poetry-forms. Some of these pieces are more poetic prose cut up into short lengths than actual poetry, but the language is good and full of interesting ideas and all are worth a read.
Last Laugh
by
TeriakiKat
A sinister look at Pettigrew at the moment he framed Sirius.
The Last Night I Ever Cried
by
Duskrider Q
Voldemort thinking about the night he killed his father. Slightly canon-shafted, since we see in HBP that the orphanage he grew up in, though a bit bleak and impersonal, was reasonably humane and well-appointed - but the imagery is still interesting.
The Last Sanguimagus: Blood Dreams
by
valis2
Companion-piece to the epic story
The Last Sanguimagus, in which Snape encounters a new young Faculty-member to whom he did serious and lasting damage when he was a Death Eater, and who has had to resort to Dark magic to keep herself functioning, and they end up collaborating in an attempt to heal injuries which were designed never to be healed.

by
Pessimistic Poet
A cat's-eye view of Prisoner of Azkaban.
Lemuria
by
My Leather Couch
This is intended to grow into a series of contemplations from Snape's point of view, although at time of writing there is only one so far. Atmospheric, genuinely poetic but a bit (OK, more than a bit) obscure.

lovesparkles
by
wild.birds
Of Cedric and Cho, catching each other's attention.
Low as Dirt
by
Nattish
Harry and Snape are lovers, but they hide their relationship away in an outdoor nook. It is to be hoped that when the poem calls Harry a "little boy" it's referring to his size more than his age, and that he is decently sixteen-plus.

A typical Mary Sue-type plot in verse form.
A Mary Sue Alphabet
by
Irony-chan
Quite funny and technically accomplished, although the alphabet form (requiring, as it does, twenty-six verses) inevitably means that it goes on a bit.

Slash piece: Snape and Lupin were once lovers, and Snape looks back with regret.

A Severitus (Snape is Harry's Dad) poem, now very AU but well-written, in which Snape and Lily were lovers and James was only ever a front.
Murdered by Fate
by

A little piece attributing Cedric Diggory's death to his drive to live up to his father's expectations. I personally think this is unfair - but it's still a good poem.

Nothing for Christmas: Slytherin, DE version
by
Lady Lestrange
Two Slytherins (a sort of even-more-malicious version of Gred 'n' Forge) recount all the awful things they've done to explain why they will be getting no presents this year. Slightly nasty, but technically accomplished and funny in a sick, Tom Lehrer-ish way.

Poem Collection
by
Eldr-Fire
A series of poems examining different characters, beginning with Snape and with Tom addressing Draco. The quality is erratic - some stanzas have obviously been bent round like a pretzel to try to make them fit the rhyming scheme - but parts of it are very good indeed.
Poems & Drabbles
by
Alcina vom Steinsberg
This is meant to be going to be a series, but at the moment it consists of one desperately sad and beautifully-written, delicate vignette of Headmaster Snape looking down from his tower room, watching Minerva walking across the grounds, unhappily regretting the estrangement which has resulted from the rôle he must play.

A poem about the fans' reactions to the ending of The Half-Blood Prince - takes rather an anti-Snape line, but is so well done I felt I had to include it.

A very high-quality poem: Lily thinks about her progressive estrangement from Petunia.

Safety in Unwanted Things
by
stuttermoan

The Saint of Pain (aka Can't Think of a Title)
by
Ex-chan
Obscure and angsty, appears to be about Snape being sexually attacked by Lucius. I wasn't sure whether to include it or not as it's very melodramatic, but decided the first verse was good enough to warrant listing. Also, with its comment about finding no rest in sleep it sounds as if it could be a vignette from the period just before the opening of the story Lost and Found, written by Dyce and myself (whitehound).

seven
by
Dannyvangeline
Cryptic, creepy descriptions of each of the books. Unfinished, as no entry has been made for Book Six - even though there is a speculative one for Book Seven (which perversely comes before Book Five, because it is used to bridge the transition from peacetime to war).
Severus
by
eosphorosa
A sad look at Snape, afraid that coming out of his self-imposed exile will hurt worse than loneliness.
Shadow Child

Shadow Dragon
by
Slightly Sinister Sinestra
After the final battle, Poppy Pomfrey sits by Snape's hospital bed, wondering if he'll wake up again. Not really very good as poetry but the sentiment was such a nice one that it won me over (being a huge Snape fan).

Lovely Spell
Short poem on the embarrasment of being in love.
She
by
takenbyHim
The viewpoint character looks at a very reserved woman who nevertheless has a powerful influence on them, and with whom they feel a powerful connection. Originally written by the author about a real person, then reinterpreted as Hermione looking at Minerva. Could be femmeslash if you wanted to read it that way, or just friendship/mentoring if not.

The Sisterhood of the Rose
by
VeilAbrya
A young couple are marrying in sunny innocence, until a spectre-like guest tells the story of her love for and bewitchment by Snape, who is here portrayed as a sort of psychic vampire, seeking minions. {Personally I think Snape is just this working class northern boy, struggling to do his best in a mind-warpingly stressful situation - but it's still an accomplished poem.]

A slightly sinister version of the Sorting Hat Song, supposedly written by Snape when he was still only a new teacher.
Snape's secret thoughts
by
Snape Slave
Snape looking at his life and his job(s) - rather an odd thing, because the content is entirely serious and yet the rhythm is reminiscent of Ogden Nash. [Warning: lines very close together and hard on the eyes. ]

Humour piece: Snape has his own "little list" of people who wouldn't be missed....

Humorous piece detailing some fannish conventions concerning Snape and Hermione.
Snarries are sweet 1
and
Snarries are sweet 2
by
Pehico
Slash pieces showing Snape and Harry desiring each other. The writer is French-speaking and the English is frankly mangled in places, but that somehow adds to their charm. May have other poems added to them later.

Something Witchy This Way Comes
by
stormsandsins
Cabaret song, wizard-style.
A Song Dedicated to Severus Snape
by
Clockwork Plum
This is an odd choice to include, because the tenor of it is sentimental and the writer is emphatically not a native English speaker, or anything like it. Yet, I thought there were signs of real talent shining through the mangled English, and the theme is interesting - being about what we, the readers, so often feel when we think about Snape.
Song of a Cursed Man
by
Cherokee girl
Of Remus Lupin, living a life ruled by the calendar.
Song of Peeves
by
Iris Lefay Longbottom
The author decided that there must be more to Peeves's "Oh Potter, you rotter" song, if he was able to add a dance routine to it. This is the result. Lightweight but technically proficient.
Sonnet Redouble
by
Essy Lasaylan
Three linked sonnets on how Karkaroff, Crouch and Voldemort himself view Voldemort's return.

Noldo
Regulus Black contemplates his fate. A poem of the highest professional standard, somewhat in the manner of TS Eliot.

by
Shadow 3013
Harry's star eclipses all those around him - and who wants to be eclipsed?
Stars and Glasses
by
Zanthe13
Extremely surreal, non-explicit poem about two lovers, officially Harry and Draco but only the line "Green and silver" suggests this, or that it is slash.
Stiff
by
spheeris1
A bisexual Draco repeatedly shies away from sexual satisfaction when it is offered.
Sting
by
Ker-rin
Albus Dumbledore as the bee who must sting Voldemort to death some day. I havered about whether to give this a star or not as it is full of annoying typing and/or grammatical errors and the end is weak: but it's so full of good ideas and images that I decided it deserved one.
Stop
by
Antifishestablishmentarianist
A poem calling on Harry to stop a moment and see the sacrifices which all around him are making to help him.

Survivor's Guilt: Cedric
by
Victorian Beauty
An unnamed Hufflepuff friend mourns the death of Cedric Diggory. As poetry this is only so-so - teetering between poetry and poetic prose - but it has some nice images and is a worthy attempt to do Cedric's memory justice.
Sweet Kiss Attraction
by
spheeris1
A thoughtful, elegant look at a slash relationship between Harry and Draco.
Tale's End
by
lemke

Ten Black Nails
by
Rain in Fire
Sirius in Azkaban (a popular theme, but this is well-done and creepy).
That new spell
by
Dracul Puget
As far as I can make out this is supposed to be a dark spell performed by mermaids - the blurb says "Its a poem, but i though that mermaids could be horrorific creatures, so i write it like a song". Unfortunately the writer isn't a native English speaker, or anything like, so the result is confusing - but it still shows signs of real talent.
There Be Ghosts
by
Mongoosey
A very accomplished series of vignettes from the lives of several characters, including the beginnings of a relationship between Harry and Draco. The section dealing with Tom Riddle has been canon-shafted.
There Is Few
by
Purplereader
Hermione thinking about Ron, when she thinks she's lost him to Lavender. This is an oddity, because the English is absolutely mangled - one assumes the writer is either not a native speaker or is severely dyslexic - yet there are signs of real poetic talent here.
there once was a man
by
chineezlamp59
Slash piece for any male couple, not really Potter-verse. Silly, slightly crude, but I included it because it's also strangely creepy and disturbing, in an odd way.
They Called Me a Snake
by
D.L. SchizoAuthoress
Snape thinking about how isolation drove him to the dark, and even now he's turned his back on darkness he is still isolated. Short but very accomplished.

This One's For You, Dad
by
DevilShoes
Harry plays Quidditch in the rain, wishing his father could see him.
Three Summers
by
Pepper Imp
A poem in which Ginny and Ron have mild (and apparently - and thankfully - unrealized) incestuous feelings. It's so well-written that I decided to include it, despite the dodgy subject-matter (and despite the totally anomalous inclusion of fireflies in a British scene).
Threnody for the Times Between
by
Episcopal Witch
A poem about the act of fan-writing itself, and about the Harry Potter fandom in particular, and its loss of innocence; about how the tenor of it got so much darker after the end of OotP when readers realized that this was a story in which major characters could and would get killed off.
Tier des Mondscheines
by
Rain in Fire
Grim but well-written piece; Peter sets Remus up to kill Sirius (although no explanation is offered as to why Sirius doesn't simply turn into Padfoot!). The title means "Beast of Moonshine."
Till the Wolves Go Away
by
Hooks Mistress
Remus asks someone to stay with him until his transformation is done. I wasn't sure whether to include this or not as about halfway through it turns melodramatic and awkward - but it includes at least one really excellent line.
The Time of the Two of Us
by
weasley74
Clever, original and immensely sad look at the timespan of a relationship (probably Ron and Hermione).
Timeline
by
Harmonic Friction
Stream-of-consciousness piece which follows Dudley's progress from spoilt toddler to reasonably decent young man. Only so-so as poetry but the psychological development is convincing.
Timepiece
by
stuttermoan
Snape looks forward with dread to the task Albus has asked him to perform, and sees them both like clockwork ticking towards a given end.
To Dumbledore, On a Death Eater
by
Gaila
Obscure but powerful poem, full of classical references. The gist of it is that Albus saw grace in Snape, under his forbidding exterior, but he now feels that by putting on a cold face in order to force Snape to obey and kill him he has slain their friendship, and he is the one who has become a murderer.
To Harry
by
EleanorLilyPotter
Lily to her son, in a joyful exultant mood rather than a sad one.
To Lily
by
Kautalya
Not actually an original poem by Kautalya, but an original translation by her of a Hindi song which fits Severus's feelings about Lily very expressively.

toujourspurPAL
On Harry, desiring to return from death.

To whom it may concern
by
Kooriya Yui
Odd, obscure little piece about Harry offering a helping hand to Draco - not very successfully.
Traitor, Betrayed
by
MagusUmbra
Between Snape and those who use him, who is the real traitor? As poetry, I have to say, this is not very good at all - much of it is just prose cut into chunks, and not even poetic prose - but the ideas and images are so interesting I decided I had to include it.
Transforming Into Ice
by
Nerfi-Tiri
Somebody, possibly Lily, watches Snape becoming more and more withdrawn. It's painfully obvious that the writer is not a native English speaker, but there's some real talent discernable through all the typos.

A filk (Science Fiction or Fantasy-based folk song) about the position Snape finds himself in at the end of HBP.

Two Lovable Young Women
by
kangeiko
A now very canon-shafted slash piece (it was written in 2001) in which Snape was James Potter's lover, and is now trying to stave off advances from Harry. Rather OC, but still well-written. The "two lovable young women" of the title are Debauchery and Death.

by

Intended as Snape but this could be the thoughts of any Death Eater who has come to regret their service to Voldemort, feeling him slowly squeezing the humanity out of them.
untitled
by
RedSiren115
A poem about rather obsessive yet ironic love for a dour, cynical man; originally written about someone in the author's real life, but could easily describe Snape.
Untitled
by
sashadavidovna
Lupin thinks about the death of Sirius as a blazing star, burning out in one bright flash (personally I think Sirius was a nasty little sociopath, but this is Lupin's p.o.v!).

Verus Amicus Est Alter Idem
by
Layha Siderea
Draco looks back at a brief moment of friendship with Harry, or even love, but which came to nothing. It's such a lovely poem, it's a pity it depends on having Draco think of autumn as "Fall" which in fact, as a Briton, he wouldn't.

Your Ladyship
by
darkrogue1
Somebody unspecified (not Ron - possibly Snape) looks at Hermione with growing admiration, and compares her to a famous 18th C warship called The Hermione. The writing is a little awkward in places, since the author is French-speaking, but it shows real talent.
