Post-Deathly Hallows
[EWE stands for "Epilogue, what epilogue?" - that is, stories which are canon compatible up to the end of DH proper, but ignore the epilogue. Stories which I consider to be especially well-written or significant are marked with a star -

12 Small Steps Against Inertia
by
tsubaki-hana
Stunningly well-written long one-shot which follows Severus's feelings about Lily and about his own life from age seven until death (although the idea that Severus drifted away from Lily, rather than vice versa, doesn't realy fit what we see in canon).
|
|
13 Ways of Looking at a Thestral
by
cathedral carver
Luna has disappeared, much to Professor Longbottom's regret, but when he finds her again she is with someone he hadn't expected. EWE one-shot.

|
30th January
by
AmyScissors
Desperately sad one-shot: from her window overlooking the playground near Spinner's End, a Muggle woman wonders about the sad-faced man in black who comes there on the same day every year, until one year he is no longer there.
|
|
Addiction
by
Emily Waters
Intense one-shot; Snape runs on rage, and when the rage runs out, so does he....
|
|
Agoraphobia
by
1silverdoe
WIP which is canon-compatible up to just before the end of DH. Remus Lupin survived. Hermione was spirited away from the battlefield by an unknown captor, and magically brainwashed into believing that Voldemort won and that her captor is hiding her and keeping her safe in return for very grim sexual favours. When Harry finally locates her, thirteen years later, he starts on a trail which may lead to the rescue of a fellow prisoner who has suffered even worse, or may lead to a wrongful accusation against him.
|
|
All Are Listed, So All Are Equal

|
And Ye Shall Find
by
Ladymage Samiko
WIP told as a series of delicate drabbles. Snape has survived but does not wish to be found. He is found by Hermione, but she too wishes to hide herself away due to some sort of nervous breakdown brought on by her torture by Bellatrix, and they end up in hiding together.
|
|
Anger Management
by
Emily Waters
Half humorous, half serious one-shot in which post-war Harry and (still alive) Severus end up on a gruesomely twee Anger Management course together.
|
|
Another Justified Death
by
astopperindeath
One-shot: Snape isn't a killer by inclination, but he has to do what it takes to do his job for the Order.
|
|
Another Man's House
by
dressagegrrrl
EWE long one-shot: Snape's chance with Hermione was taken away from him but while there's life, there's hope. Bittersweet and very well written - on the down side it depends on the fanon idea of a life-debt and on Hermione being vengeful, melodramatic, rigid and unforgiving, which makes you wonder if Snape should give up and find somebody nicer.
|
|
The Apprentice and the Necromancer
(formerly Probation) by
JunoMagic
Long EWE multi-part story with slight Garth Nix crossover, which is canon up until Snape is bitten by Nagini. Hermione manages to save his life, ending up poisoned herself in the process. While Snape is still unconscious he is tried in absentia for crimes he committed as a Death Eater, and given three years' probation, during which he must find a wife or face life in Azkaban. Later, the story morphs into a mystery thriller, as Severus and Hermione investigate a magical threat to the survival of reality itself, with ramifications leading beyind the Veil. Continued in The Book of the Dead.

machshefa
Delicate one-shot, tracing the rapport which grows between Headmaster Snape and Luna, as she sketches those elements of Hogwarts which are worth preserving.
|
|
Ashes, Ashes
by
Mrs James Norrington
Desperately sad but beautifully written vignette of Snape, dying, thinking about Lily and his own expectation of failure, which had held him back from properly expressing his feelings for her.
|
|
Ashes of Armageddon
by
Emily Waters
An extremely grim but very well-written complete multi-part story, AU starting from the scene where Harry confronts Voldemort in the Forest. Tom's Horcrux has had a more lasting influence on Harry than was apparent at the time. Five years after the war, an increasingly dark Harry, still convinced that Snape was a traitor, forces the convalescent ex-spy to become his bonded slave so he can make him suffer for all the crimes he imagines him to have committed. Although there are some very cruel and vividly-written torture scenes this is not as nasty as "Harry punishes Snape" stories usually are, since Snape knows from the first that he has allies in Hermione and Ron, and he is collaborating with them to work out what is wrong with Harry before he metamorphoses into the next Dark Lord. Eventually the story becomes an HP/SS slash romance (moderately explicit but quite tastefully-handled), as well as a continuing action drama; the transition is convincing and the relationship realistically awkward and difficult, still complicated by the scars and echoes of the past.
|
|
The Asp at Hogwarts
by
Inkwolf
Long complete multi-part story which follows Albus Severus Potter's first year at Hogwarts, and the mysterious quest set him by the white-skinned, black-haired ghost whose name he does not think to ask. Like JKR (but unlike most fan-writers) the author has the gift of writing believably about teenagers whilst still making them interesting to adults, and the Original Characters are some of the liveliest and most interesting in fan-fiction.
|
|
Asphodel and Wormwood
by
rabbit and -v-Jinx-v
One-shot: Severus strikes up a rapport with Winky which will ultimately save his life.
|
|
Bad Days Are Going Around
by
cathedral carver

|
|
Be Neither
by
moira of the mountain
One-shot: a student tidies away Snape's books after his death, and remembers his advice to her.
|
|
Be sure to act your part convincingly
by
tearsofphoenix
A sad, touching one-shot which loooks at Snape's thoughts just before and during his death-scene, and the lifetime of dedication and self-doubt which brought him there. You can decide for yourself whether Snape has truly died, or whether his story develops as it does in the more hopeful continuation I open at the close.
|
|
beat and break
by
shadows and sunshine
A series of sad elegaic snapshots of the relationship between Severus and Lily. One-shot.
|
|
Beautiful Bird
by

|
|
Birds of a Feather
by
wolfwillow
Fawkes saves Snape from Nagini's bite and the pair go wandering together, seeking to heal Snape's soul as well as his body. Interesting, amusingly-written WIP with slight Lovecraft crossover.
|
|
Bittersweet Charity
by
CeliaEquus
Long one-shot - after a magical accident, post-epilogue Hermione is cast back in time and assumes the twin rôles of Charity Burbage, and Snape's lover - but neither of them can change what's coming. I've listed it as post-DH because that's it's main focus but it actually loops back to before Harry and Hermione's third year.
|
|
Bleeding
by
HedwigsHaven
Hermione manages to keep Snape alive long enough for him to be retrieved and taken to St Mungo's, but he is left weak and delirious. Exciting and touching EWE WIP which looks at how various different characters react to Snape's survival.
|
|
Blind
by
dontdreamoffallingconsciously
EWE WIP: the wizarding community wants security at all costs, and the Trio find themselves working for a well-intentioned but stultifyingly controlling Ministry. Annoyingly fall of minor proofing-errors but reads convincingly. Will involve Snape and a Time Turner at some point.
|
|
Blood
by
Kate1221
Vivid little vignette of Snape, haunted by memory.
|
|
The Book of the Dead
by
JunoMagic
EWE WIP with slight Garth Nix crossover, continuing on from The Apprentice and the Necromancer. Hermione has been rescued but has lost her nerve for performing magic. Meanwhile some of the wizard-hating Necromancers of the latter-day Inquisition are stiill unaccounted for, Tom Riddle's spirit is slated to return as a powerful demon, and Fudge's political ambitions are on the move. |
|
The Caretaker
by
Aurette
Ron saves Snape's life but comes to resent the trouble he represents, and Harry is unable to prevent the Ministry from sending Snape to Azkaban. Finally released from a long sentence, he has to serve in a menial position although he does so with moral support from Harry and Hermione. WIP, EWE HGSS eventually.
|
|
A Challenging Change of the Heart
by
tearsofphoenix
EWE one-shot: Snape has survived, barely, his injuries in Deathly Hallows, thanks to a belated intervention by Hermione. She is eaten up by guilt at not having acted sooner, but over the months guilt grows into something warmer and more personal. Forms a trilogy with Watching the Witch and The Headmaster's Tale.
|
|
Cloaking Truth in Shroud
by
lunawannabe
Intense vignette of Snape (who has survived Nagini, and is still teaching) watching the sorting of Lily Luna Potter and of an uncared-for-looking young boy who reminds him strongly of himself.
|
|
Coda to an Epilogue: Twenty Years Later or The Kids Are All Right:
Part One ,
Part Two and
Part Three
by
mistful
Long three-part story concerning the reputation and future of Slytherin House. Scorpius Malfoy and Albus Severus Potter are best friends. When they and Albus Severus's brother James get lost in a vast sewer system during an exchange visit to Durmstrang, Harry and Draco become reluctant allies in the search to find their sons. Touching and amusing, especially concerning the friendship between the two boys.

|
|
Conversations on a Broom
by
Aurette
Humorous EWE HGSS one-shot: an older Hermione and Snape are both working, rather creakily, as Aurors. A shared broom and an attempt to rescue Draco from his own self-destructive behaviour leads to a flirtatious evening. Lively and amusingly written.
|

|
|

|
|
Dated 2 May, 1998
by
Lady Altair
Touching one-shot of Katie Bell, remembering how Snape kept her alive when she was cursed.
|
|
Denial
by
little beloved
A very sophisticated, well-crafted (but rather slow-moving) attempt to shoehorn the standard Marriage Law plot into post-DH canon: Hermione must marry, and Snape (already married) has the job of playing official matchmaker. Examines the law itself and makes it seem much more interesting and believable than is usually the case. Multi-part, complete EWE.
|
|
Destroyed
by
halfwayhopeful
EWE WIP, possibly going to be slash: post-war, Harry and Severus both suffer from nightmares and psychological trauma, and a chance encounter in the night-time leads to a new sympathy between them - as well as to Harry flopping unconscious on Snape's sofa.
|
|
The Dissolution Law
by
Mia Madwyn
EWE complete multi-part story: variant on the standard Marriage Law fic. Snape survived but was only saved from Azkaban by Hermione's willingness to marry him: a circumstance about which he was less than happy. Five years later the law is repealed and they are permitted to divorce, but Hermione is still concerned about Snape's wellbeing, even if nobody else seems to be. When Hermione is taken ill, Snape finds that is more concerned about her in turn than either of them realised.

|
|
End of the Line
by
shewhoguards
Multi-part story of which each part can stand alone, with slight Discworld crossover. Beginning with Severus, a series of characters wait for the train at an astral King's Cross, overseen by a skeletal, humorous guardsman. Each section makes an interesting and hopeful point about how death and the astral work.
|
|
Epilogue: A Requiem For Three Parts
by
LilLolaBlue
EWE WIP. Snape has survived, but all the survivors are emotionally damaged. Snape is probably the most nearly-functional and he has ended up in a strange ménage à trois with Hermione and Ron, trying to hold the others together as Harry and Ron waver in and out of addiction and mental breakdown. The story goes into some detail on the younger men's work for the Auror Office, and promises to have a crime/detective element.
|
|
Eternity
by
Onatah1
Long one-shot: portrait-Severus finally finds the peace and friendship which had eluded him in life.
|
|
Exonerated
by

|
|
Exorcism
by
sylvanawood
EWE WIP. Snape has survived, but most people still distrust him and his situation is an uneasy one. He seeks peace in the Room of Requirement but it is still erratic, following the damage it sustained in DH, and insists on presenting him with three wishes which will exorcise some of his lingering regrets. In the first chapter, he discovers what would probably have happened if he had not lost his temper and insulted Lily, and realises that the problems between them were not solely, or even mainly, his fault.

|
|
Felinated!
by
AbstractConcept

|
|
A Few Thoughts on Turning Thirty
by
Hypnobarb
EWE SSHG one-shot: Harry thinks about turning thirty, and how all his friends - including Snape and Hermione - have turned out.
|
|
Fifty
by
excessivelyperky
One-shot: after death, Snape finds himself in a Danté-esque Purgatory, working out his sins and his anger-management issues, and finds he actually rather enjoys it - especially as he gets to experience some novel sins, such as Sloth, which he'd never had the chance to try in life.
|
|
The Fine Art of Fine Print
by
Mundungus42
When funding is withdrawn for Hermione's research into quantifying magic, she is forced - more or less literally - to take a job at a Hogwarts run by Headmistress Molly Weasley, whose controlling over-protectiveness has mutated into something monstrous, and who is holding Snape effectively prisoner to force him to work for her. EWE, multi-part, complete, full of interesting ideas about the nature of magic and the structure of Hogwarts, quite sexually explicit.

Just one more time;
Forever;
Homecoming.

Having survived Nagini, barely and with the help of Aberforth, Snape has ended up drifting across America with two orphaned Lakota children. |
The Great Pixie Dust Up
by
Mundungus42
Long EWE one-shot with slight Discworld crossover: Severus and Luna combine forces to thwart a Ministry plot involving steampunk weapons powered by pixies. tearsofphoenix
A "fourth wall" piece (that is, one in which the boundaries between fiction and reality are breached), consisting of a 300-word drabble in which Snape considers both the death which "she" has given him and the new life the fanwriters may bring him. Follows on from Beyond the End, and is followed by I've Always Felt Strange, which leads into the same author's series of now-AU ficlets in which Snape becomes Headmaster after the war.

I've Always Felt Strange
by
tearsofphoenix
A "fourth wall" piece (that is, one in which the boundaries between fiction and reality are breached), in which Hermione considers the relationship between canon and fanfiction and whether the characters have an independent life beyond both, in which Snape may meet a much better fate than his original author gave him. Follows on from Beyond the End and I've Always Felt Alone, and leads into the same author's series of now-AU ficlets in which Snape becomes Headmaster after the war.

I Need to Breathe
by
FirstYear
Rather rowdy multi-part EWE in which Godric's sword sends Neville to save Snape's life, and Granny Augusta then tricks Hermione and Snape into marrying as part of a bid to keep him out of prison. Aggravatingly Britpicky and the characters have a frustrating habit of making the same mistakes over and over, but still a good involving read.

|
I open at the close

Humorous WIP, EWE because Hermione's relationship with Ron is going nowhere. After his plan to survive Nagini's bite goes wrong, Snape is left stranded, part ghost, part physical and all invisible, and not sure what he is or what to do about it. After he discovers that a kitten, at least, can see him, he decides to haunt Hermione, whose attempts to help him result in complex loops through time and a badly-spelled communication system mediated by cats.

|
Jericho Road
by
AmanitaMuscaria
Long slash one-shot. A chance meeting in a graveyard leads Harry to realise that Snape has survived; the urge to speak to him and to talk about Lily gradually develops into something more. That doesn't sound all that unusual but the writing is exceptionally good and evocative.

by
machshefa
Heavily Gothic EWE WIP. Years after the war, everying who destroyed a Horcrux, or was bitten by Nagini, is slowly dying. A mysterious Muggle Tarot reader brings Snape and Hermione, both sick, together to try to solve the problem. Original and interesting, although the highly-decorated prose can be a bit heavy going.

by

|
Penal Servitude
by
Sloane Ranger
EWE multi-part story. Snape survives, but a corrupt Ministry refuses to acknowledge his innocence and he is condemned to Azkaban for ten miserable years, and then released only to be sold as a slave. Purchased by Arthur, he works with the remnant of the Order to uncover a dark scheme to crush dissent by controlling the minds of the British wizarding population. I was in two minds whether to include this because the character development and writing-style are only so-so: there is, for example, almost no consideration of the psychological effects Snape's suffering would have had on him. But the plot is complex, fast-paced and exciting and it managed to hold my attention.

Polyandry and Other Problems
by
refya
EWE WIP which takes an original look at the Marriage Law Challenge plot. In a final act of sabotage before his death, Voldemort has attempted to take the wizarding world down with him by seeding a plague which selectively kills witches. The Ministry wants two or more wizards to marry each surviving witch in order to maintain the gene pool. New widower Lucius suggests that he and Severus should marry the same woman which, in his case, will be a marriage in name only: convalescent Hermione seems like an obvious choice but she has lost her memory of the friendship which had grown up between herself and Snape after the war. Emotionally serious, not an excuse for group sex scenes.

Long EWE SSHG one-shot: Hermione's curiosity is piqued by an interesting discovery about Snape's past. Very good on the emotional contortions people get themselves into if they find they've been mistaken about someone.
|
|
The Serious and the Smirk
by

Humorous piece in five chapters: Harry waits in trepidation to speak to Snape's portrait, hoping that death and the realization that Harry now Knows All won't have left the man embarrassingly sentimental. He shouldn't have worried....

|
|
Severe Reasoning
by
Rachel Indeed
Long, complex one-shot which matches the stages of Snape's life from boyhood to death against quotes from the Sherlock Holmes stories. The portrayal of Snape as youth and young man is darker and more grand guignol than IMO canon really supports, but it's cleverly done, and stunningly well-written.
|
|
Severus Snape: A Beginner's Guide
by
hexgirl489
EWE WIP: Snape has survived and sunk back into obscurity at Spinner's End, unaware that a woman who drinks in the same pub as him knows who he is and is a devoted fan. Extremely well-written and the dour, Gothy OFC is refreshingly unsoupy.

InkyKate
Elegantly-written WIP which begins with Snape's death scene as seen from his own point of view. I don't know where it goes after that because at this point there's only the one chapter.

Sleeping Beauty
by
Huldra
Nineteen years after the war, Snape wakes from the dead, no longer a corpse but not quite living either and not sure why or how, and seeks out Harry. Humorous slash mystery, WIP, well-written but the author is not a native English speaker and the text has many linguistic oddities and annoying Britpicks.
|
|

Snape's missing body should be laid to rest, but maybe rest isn't on his agenda. Wittily macabre one-shot.

There, Where I Can Never Find You
by
machshefa
Severus and Hermione are researching a mysterious magical illness which destroys memory, but then Severus himself vanishes, his memory artificially alterred to turn him into a Muggle. Multi-part, complete, beautifully written and touching but annoyingly designed, using a hard-to-read font and sappy artwork which renders the text almost illegible in places.

|
Things Unsaid
by
AurelianMagelet
Gentle two-parter showing Snape fading out of life quite peacefully, falling into his own dreams in the hopes that Harry will understand the information given mind to mind.

When Harry comes to teach Defence Against the Dark Arts, shortly after the Epilogue, he discovers that Snape's portrait seems unexpectedly alive. by
Lililedger
Snape thinks about Harry and his connection to Lily, down the years.

|
Time After Time
by
Sushi
Complete, long two-parter: unbeknownst to the Wizarding World, Snape somehow survived Nagini, but the residue of her venom left him lost in hallucinations, convinced that he is a refugee in a world in which Voldemort won and Lily and Harry were his own wife and son, taken from him by Death Eaters. Twenty years on, a chance encounter with the real Harry leads to a period of desperate confusion as Harry and his own doe Patronus struggle to reclaim his mind and rebuild his life. Mild slash elements.

Truffles and Strawberries
by
chivalric
Draco manages to rescue a dying Snape and keep him (barely) alive, but he has no idea how to handle him - or what he needs to hear. A touching medical and psychological drama, although IMO the last chapter suffers from having been squashed into the shape of a challenge-story about sensuality which clashes wildly with the rest of it. EWE and slightly AU in that Remus also survived. Four-part, complete.

|
Two Strangers at the Door
by
reenka
Harry tries to bring Snape back to life but it all goes horribly wrong, leaving Snape with a restless unsatisfying half-life to which there can be only one end. Depressing, but highly original and well-written.

|
Veiled
by
GreenGecko
Long one-shot which takes an interesting and convincing look at Snape adjusting to his own death, although its take on Dumbledore is both kinder and less angst-ridden than the end of DH would lead us to expect.
|
|
The Vibrator, the Witch and the Painting
by
sylvanawood
Explicit but quite touching humorous multi-part HGSS story. Twenty-one years after the war, Snape returns to Britain and acquires a house which has been extensively booby-trapped with Dark curses. Harry and a divorced, sex-starved Hermione attempt to help him disarm the curses, with chaotic results which eventually lead to romance.

|
Watching the Witch
by
tearsofphoenix
EWE one-shot: having survived, barely, his injuries in Deathly Hallows, Snape gradually learns to hope for the future, and to watch Hermione with a warmth more mature and realistic than the blind adoration he had felt for Lily. Forms a trilogy with A Challenging Change of the Heart and The Headmaster's Tale.

What Ever Happened to You, Severus Snape?
by
hogsmead.girl
Exceptionally clever and convincing, if slightly confusing, EWE piece in which a depressed, disoriented Snape is examining his and Harry's memories of his own survival, and attempting to understand why Harry's attitude to him changed. Hard to read in places because ffn has peppered the text with mathematical symbols, but still a very convincing look at Snape's sourly skittish personality and thought-processes. The story is posted as a long one-shot, but is broken into several chapters within a single page and in any case ends at such an odd point that the listing as "complete" may be an error.

|
What Is This Thing Called Love?
by
kittyperry
EWE WIP: Snape has survived and is still headmaster. Along with Bill Weasley, Harry and Hermione are both asked to return to Hogwarts and take up some teaching duties in the new curriculum, but Harry's personality has been changed for the worse through his contact with Dark Magic. HGSS eventually.

When Sleeping Feels Like Dying
by
cathedral carver
A lifetime of danger and abuse has left Severus chronically unable to let go and relax into sleep, but when he recognises a fellow insomniac in Hermione, their shared wakefulness leads to companionship in the restless night. |
|
Where the Breezes Know My Name
by
Scion of Kushiel
Long one-shot, AU from the last chapter of DH. Hermione has been hit by a fatal curse in the last minutes of the battle. As she and Snape both die a lingering death, their souls meet side by side in a gentle limbo.

|
Where Your Treasure Is
by
zeegrindylows
The first two or three chapters of this EWE multi-parter are weak, but it improves as it goes on, and later chapters are full of excellent dialogue and interesting character-insights. Snape survives, barely, with the aid of a healing potion and a link with Hermione which may turn out to be much more than it seems. Meanwhile, a near-death vision of Lily leaves him confused and distressed about the reality of his own feelings.

The White Road
by
perverse_idyll
Novella-length slash one-shot: Lily, watching from the afterlife via a kind of astral TV-set, looks at Harry's current life and possible future and forsees a relationship with the boy she herself had rejected, but whom she gradually comes to appreciate in hindsight. Superbly well-written and, apart from making Snape gay, absolutely canon-compatible, with witty and spot-on characterisation (Gellert, for example, is described as a "cat-eyed, mellifluous creep"). Listed as AU as well as Post-DH because it openly plays with the idea of alternative futures.

|
Who are you looking at?
by
Pineapple Chiffon Cake
Harry is plagued by wondering whether Snape ever cared about him as a person at all, and decides to retrieve the Resurrection Stone and ask him. Meanwhile, Snape has been given a chance to return to life. Will be slash, which seems vaguely incestuous now we know that Snape loved Harry's mum, but the style is fresh and amusing. WIP
